A glacier breakes out from the thick inland ice, which seems
to vanish into the infinite. The trip goes from
"Narssarssuaq" (an old American airbase) to
"Kangillinguit", which is the native word for "Green
valley".
In the bottom of the Arsukfiord stands "Arsuk
glasier".
As you can faintly see (color shift on cliff side) this
glasier has been on retreat the last hundreds years.
This picture is taken in the summer time and there is some
activity in the glasier.
This is a close up of the tunnel from the
melting water.
The same glasier as before; this time taken in January.
By snowmobile it is possible to make the trip on the fiordice
and get real close, as I dare right here.
The glasier has almost no activity. But if you whistle, shout or
clap your hands, you might wake the glasier for a second and a
piece might brake off.
The ice gets its blue shade from the compression of the snow and
tiny airbubbles in the ice. This ice is approx. 10-20.000 years of
age.
You can figure out the height of the glasier by compparing it to other people
standing next to it. (the black dots in the center)
Nope! You can´t stop yourself singing or praising the lord
for this magnificent piece of nature.
